COVID-19 Update/Response

For Immediate Release

When this COVID-19 pandemic first started, many experienced some level of concern, trepidation, or outright fear from the unknowns and unprecedented shutdowns.

It was heartwarming and impressive to see Big Horn County residents pull together and start preparing for an unknown attacker. Hundreds upon hundreds of masks, gowns and caps were sewn by volunteers. Food and resources were shared freely, and the communities rallied around each other, recognizing the worth of a soul was greater than our immediate comforts and routines. This time was invaluable because it gave all of us time to prepare for the unknown and it provided us with confidence, supplies and updated knowledge.

The first notification of a positive case in Big Horn County, again triggered a level of concern and renewed trepidation in April of 2020 almost a full two months after the first state health orders were issued.

As public health officials became familiar with the disease and its effects, that knowledge was shared freely and citizens began to adapt and overcome fear. The collaboration between citizens and officials allowed the county to open up rodeos, graduations, parades, sports, schools, businesses, churches and other events.

Now it appears the COVID enemy has finally found Big Horn County in earnest and has launched a full scale attack on our citizens throughout the county. This current outbreak was predicted and inevitable given the nature of COVID. Our response to this outbreak needs to be consistent with the current recommendations and knowledge gained.

Across the Nation and in Big Horn County divisions have arisen and detracted from our focus of Big Horn County Strong and caring for each other. When things get tough it’s easy to point fingers in either direction. Arguments on either side of health and safety recommendations whether based in fact or not, are not productive nor helpful given the rise in cases and deaths that we are currently experiencing. Today’s COVID report includes 5 new deaths in Big Horn County. Our hearts grieve with these and the other families who have experienced loss during this pandemic.

What we need now is to care for one another as we did when this pandemic began. A renewed commitment to practice safety protocols is critical at this time, not because of government mandates, but out of concern for our loved ones and neighbors. The protection of our communities depends on the leadership that comes from within each of us. By taking the simple safety precautions that have been asked, we help to keep our communities, businesses, schools, churches and the activities that are important to all of us open and as safe as possible.

Big Horn County has always been known to take care of our own, now is the time to prove it!

State Total of Coronavirus-Related Deaths Goes Up to 50

The count of coronavirus-related deaths among Wyoming residents who had tested positive for COVID-19 has gone up to 50, according to the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH).

Deaths among Wyoming residents are added to the state’s coronavirus-related death total based on official death certificate information and the location of the person’s permanent residence. Deaths among Wyoming residents who pass away in other states are not counted in both states. If death certificates do not describe COVID-19 as either causing or contributing to a person’s death, those deaths are not included in Wyoming’s count of coronavirus-related deaths.

Among Wyoming residents, there have now been 50 coronavirus-related deaths, 4,231 lab-confirmed cases and 785 probable cases reported since the pandemic began.

COVID-19 Update/Response

For Immediate Release

Beginning Today, September 1, 2020 we will discontinue the duplication of posting positive case notices for Big Horn County. This has been a duplication of services already provided by the Wyoming Department of Health. We encourage interested citizens to find this information on the Wyoming Department of Health Website at https://health.wyo.gov/publichealth/infectious-disease-epidemiology-unit/disease/novel-coronavirus/covid-19-map-and-statistics/ This change will eliminate some of the confusion that has been noted by differences in notification timing for updates to state and local data.

We will continue to share other important updates, current health orders and useful information on this website as well as the facebook pages for Public Health and Emergency Management.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind citizens of the importance of continuing the exposure reduction practices of social distancing and masking that have been emphasized throughout this emergency. Remember, this is not forever, this is just for now!

COVID-19 Update/Response

For Immediate Release

Today August 13, 2020 the Big Horn County Public Health Department received the unfortunate news of the death of a Big Horn County resident with COVID-19. The individual was an elderly male with underlying medical conditions who was hospitalized out of state. This is the first resident of Big Horn County to lose their life while testing positive for the virus. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

We continue to share the following recommended actions aimed at preventing as many serious illnesses and deaths connected to this virus as possible. Personal action that can help avoid the spread of COVID-19 include:

We have learned that most people who are infected are able to recover at home without medical care, we also know that people who are aged 65 and older, have medical conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes and weak immune systems are more likely to experience complications and become severely ill.

Please take the actions listed above and help us prevent further spread and possible fatalities in our County.

Funds allocated for Wyoming businesses to receive PPE

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon has allocated $2 million to the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security to purchase and distribute Personal Protective Equipment to non-health care related entities. This effort will support public safety for businesses and communities across the state under the new health orders.

WOHS will be working with the Wyoming Business Council to assess the specific needs as restrictions are eased. Needs of businesses will be assessed in future communications with WOHS and the Business Council.

“We are happy to help our Wyoming businesses as we move forward in easing restrictions,” Director Lynn Budd, Wyoming Office of Homeland Security said. “Ensuring our communities have the essential needs to navigate this process is important to our state’s recovery."

Information will be available on the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security website at hls.wyo.gov and questions may be emailed to wohsppeinfo@wyo.gov.

April 27, 2020
3:00 PM
This Monday, as we near the end of April we are cautiously optimistic that things are beginning to level out, we are beginning to see a flat line and breathe a bit easier regarding COVID-19 cases in Big Horn County. With that in mind, we will be scaling back our daily press releases/updates. We realize the public has been saturated with the importance of the Do the 5 to Stay Alive message. We appreciate your continued support and vigilance in maintaining these prevention measures. An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Moving forward we will have Monday and Thursday press releases as needed and will certainly provide real time updates as the Governor and Public Health Officials release modified health orders. We are as anxious to restart our economy as you are. Update

This announcement from State Health Officer Harrist is a tragic reminder of why we need to
“STAY THE COURSE”

*********************************************
Four Deaths Added to Wyoming’s Coronavirus-Related Count

Four Fremont County residents, all previously identified as laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases, have died, according to the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH).

The newly confirmed deaths include an older man, older woman, adult woman and adult man. Each had been hospitalized. Two of the four had existing conditions that put them at higher risk of serious illness related to the virus. There have been 320 confirmed and 116 probable cases reported so far from across Wyoming.
“These announcements are difficult to make,” said Dr. Alexia Harrist, state health officer and state epidemiologist with WDH.

“We’ve talked a lot about who has the highest risk of hospitalization and death related to this disease and that is important information,” she said. “But the truth is anyone can get sick with COVID-19, anyone has a chance of a serious illness and anyone who is infected can pass COVID-19 on to others.”

WDH recommendations to help slow the spread of illness include:

Symptoms reported with COVID-19 include fever, cough and shortness of breath.

********************************
Please don’t let this happen to your family, friends or neighbors. We realize these health orders have been in place for a rather long time and that we are all getting restless and struggle with varying levels of isolation and fear. If we continue to diligently follow the health orders and social distancing practices, we can continue to make a difference in our county and increase our chances to transition toward recovery and reopening of many of our business sooner.

Limiting outings is important. The more places you go, the greater opportunity there is for the virus to spread. When you have to go out, only do so for essentials.

Governor Gordon issues 6 th Directive

The Wyoming liquor division summarized this directive as follows:

The Governor has updated his last executive order for restaurant and bar & grill license holders. These license holders can now sell up to 2 bottles of wine (1,500 ml total) and up to 72 ounces of beer. Any container that is less than 72 ounces and is sealed in some way is allowed. Sealed means putting the container in a bag and sealing it with heat or staples, putting a strip or security tape across the cap or lid, shrink wrapping the cap or lid or having a breakable seal in a cap or lid (like a milk jug or twist off cap that leaves a ring on the container when broken).
